Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes believes Manchester United's James Wilson has shown in the past that he has the ability to become a top player.

Wilson joined the Scottish outfit from Manchester United on a season-long loan deal as it became clear that he is not part of Jose Mourinho’s plans going forward.

Once considered a top prospect in the Manchester United academy, the striker's career has petered out due to injuries and a lack of form and he was not even part of the club's pre-season tour of the United States in the summer.

Wilson scored on his debut for Manchester United in 2014 and McInnes believes that he clearly has talent as he would not have played for the Old Trafford outfit otherwise.

The Aberdeen manager admits that there have been mitigating circumstances which have stunted his development, but he is certain that Wilson retains the ability, which could still take him to the top if he is willing to work hard.

“There was a lot expected of him and for whatever reason, injuries and alike, he’s now found himself where, like a lot of loan players, he has had a lot of ups and downs.

“Particularly at a club like Manchester United, where you can seem so far away from the first team.

"It’s important now he feels this is a step to where he needs to get to.

“He’s already shown in spells in his young career his potential to be a top, top player.

“If he can play regular football here I’m sure that potential will be fulfilled, whether that’s going back to Manchester United or other options elsewhere.”

Wilson has entered the last year of his contract at Manchester United and will be available on a free transfer next summer.
