Arsenal complete deal for 18-year-old Portuguese goalkeeper

Everton have completed the signing of Portugal youth shot-stopper Joao Virginia from Arsenal on a three-year deal.

The 18-year-old goalkeeper was part of the Selecao side that beat rivals Italy in the Under-19 European Championship final in Finland on Sunday.

Born in Faro, Joao Virginia joined the north London club back in 2015 after progressing through the ranks of the Benfica academy and participated in 22 matches for the Under-18s and Under-23s the last term.

“I am really happy to be at Everton,” Virginia told the official Toffees website.

“I hope to learn a lot from the goalkeepers here, Jordan Pickford, who had a great season and World Cup and Maarten Stekelenburg, who is very experienced too. This is a great opportunity for me.”

Joao Virginia is Everton’s third signing of the summer after Richarlison and Lucas Digne, both players were previously linked with moves to Merseyside rivals Liverpool but of them preferred Goodison Park over Anfield.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are working to fork out a deal for Spain international Lucas Vazquez who was considering Santiago Bernabeu due to the lack of playing time last season, but the change of the head coach may hand the attacker more regular first-team football.
