Ian Wright: Manchester United’s Luke Shaw is England’s best left-back

Shaw at Manchester United

Luke Shaw joined Manchester United in July of 2014 from Southampton for a fee in the region of £33.75 million.
Despite this being a huge fee for a defender at the time, Shaw has never really held down a place in United’s first XI.

Granted, Shaw has struggled with several injuries since joining Manchester United.

However, even when fit, Shaw has often struggled to earn a starting spot, especially under Jose Mourinho.

But after Ashley Young needed time to recover from the 2018 World Cup, Shaw was given his chance to shine at the start of this season.

The Englishman has, so far, not disappointed.

Shaw has played every minute for United in the Premier League this season.

Shaw even scored his first senior goal vs Leicester as United won 2-1.

The 23-year-olds excellent start to the season has also earned him a call-up to England’s latest squad.

He probably is England’s best left-back’

Furthermore, Shaw has been receiving huge praise from England and Arsenal legend, Ian Wright.

“You can’t totally blame everything on the manager [Mourinho] – he hasn’t helped – but he himself needed to be a lot stronger in the way he was trying to get himself going and he seemed to shy away from it.

“He needed to get through that, which he’s now done, and we’ve seen a different side to Shaw which I’m really impressed with. I just hope he can continue doing it because I think, on form, he probably is England’s best left-back.

“He came back early in pre-season to work on his fitness and he’s seeing the fruit of his labours now. What he’s done mentally too, I think we’re going to see a really good player from this point on. I thought he was good against Tottenham, going forward positively and it’s what you want.”
