The 22-year-old Uruguayan midfielder swapped Sampdoria for north London this summer thus ending a three-year association with I Blucerchiati.

Having played with the number 34 throughout his professional career, he found that number to be occupied, which led him to Arsenal’s creator-in-chief.

“I wanted to pick the number 34 but It was already taken by Xhaka,” he told Uruguayan radio show 100% Deporte on Sport 890 (via Daily Mirror).

“I chose the number 11 because it’s the day of my birthday and I will get the chance to sit next to Mesut Ozil in the dressing room!”
Torreira’s journey

Torreira, who has represented Uruguay on no fewer than eight occasions at international level, came through Pescara’s academy before making just 36 appearances for their senior team registering five goals and one assist in the process.

An ever-present for the Blucerchiati last season he only missed two of their 38 league outings as Marco Giampaolo’s finished tenth in the Italian championship.

His performances earned him a place in Uruguay’s squad at this summer’s World Cup, featuring in all of their matches, as well as a dream move to England.

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign by welcoming champions Manchester City on August 12.
