Man Utd news: Richard Dunne says Jose Mourinho's football is from a different era

Jose Mourinho’s side were criticised for their defensive approach last season, having lacked free-flowing attacking football since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge.

Under David Moyes the team struggled greatly, and Louis van Gaal’s philosophy was deemed too robotic.

While Mourinho has helped Manchester United climb back up the table and delivered trophies, there is plenty of issues off the field.

The Portuguese has not been happy with the club’s transfer activity ahead of the new campaign.

And Dunne believes United’s big rivals have the right approach for modern football compared to Mourinho.

Dunne said on BT Sport: “If you look at Manchester City, Chelsea now, Liverpool, maybe Arsenal, it’s almost like Manchester United are being left behind because the football they’ve playing is from a different era.

“This is all about going forward and trying to win games now, not sitting back and trying to knick points here and there.

"These are the teams you want to watch on the TV on a weekend.

“The brand of football is what’s prominent with Sarri coming here. On the front foot, attacking teams.

“You can look at Pochettino, you can look at Klopp, look at Pep, these managers are doing that. It seems like a new age of football.

“We look at Manchester United and they’re very much more a defensive side first before anything else. 

“We have to wait and see. They finished second last year.”

Mourinho’s team get the new Premier League season underway on Friday when they host Leicester (8pm).
