Man Utd transfer news: Harry Maguire given advice on move, Toby Alderweireld deal backed

MANCHESTER UNITED should drop their interest in Harry Maguire and sign Toby Alderweireld instead.
Man Utd transfer news: Harry Maguire only joined Leicester last season

That’s according Sky Sports pundit Dean Ashton, who says that Harry Maguire should continue his development at Leicester for the time being.
United are keen on bringing in a new centre-back before the transfer window shuts this Thursday but have so far been unsuccessful in their attempts.

Tottenham defender Alderweireld, Barcelona centre-back Yerry Mina and more recently Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng have all been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Alderweireld has been linked with United for several months due to his contract situation at Spurs.

Man Utd transfer news: How Yerry Mina could fit into Jose Mourinho's starting XI
MAN UTD TRANSFER NEWS: Yerry Mina is being linked with a move to Old Trafford, but how could the Barcelona defender slot into Jose Mourinho’s XI?

The Belgian’s current deal expires at the end of the upcoming campaign, with the north London club having the option of a one-year extension, but that would trigger a clause in his contract that would make him available for £25m.

Maguire is four years younger than Alderweireld and only joined Leicester from Hull last summer.

Singing him is also likely to cost a world-record fee for a defender, with a figure higher than the £75m that Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk being reported.

Former centre-forward Ashton is a fan of the England World Cup star but says in could be beneficial for him to spend another year at Leicester before then making the move.

Man Utd transfer news: Toby Alderweireld could be allowed to leave Spurs for £25m

“I think Alderweireld would probably be the most likely,” Ashton said.

“He hasn’t agreed a new contract with Tottenham which makes you think there’s definitely something not right there. They could be willing to sell possibly.
“Harry Maguire, I just think he’s had a fantastic World Cup, his stock hasn’t been higher, but maybe just one more season in the Premier League with Leicester I think could do him the world of good and then he can make the next step.

“But it’s difficult as a player when you know the top clubs are looking at you.”
