Newcastle United loan deal for Marlon Santos dependent on work permit – Sport



Barcelona are set to loan Marlon to Newcastle for the season according to Spanish media, a £1.8m loan fee but no option to buy.


Rafa Benitez is desperate to add a couple of defenders in these last 24 hours of the transfer window, and is frantically working through a list of targets, according to north east media.

The latest name to be put forward is Marlon Santos, more commonly known as just Marlon.

The Brazilian centre-back is with Barcelona and over in Spain, newspaper Sport has reported on Wednesday late afternoon that a provisional loan deal is on the verge of being agreed with Newcastle.

The centre-back turns 23 next month and Sport reports that the deal is mainly dependent on a work permit being granted.

Barcelona signed Marlon on a season’s loan from Brazilian club Fluminese in summer 2016, the defender making two La Liga appearances as well as playing regularly for the Barcelona reserve team.

He did enough to earn a £4m move and a four year contract last summer (2017) but was then instantly loaned out to Nice.

It was a two year loan arrangement with an option to buy for £18m at the end of it but the loan deal was cut short this summer when Nice boss Patrick Vieira decided not to continue with it.

The Spanish newspaper report says that a Newcastle loan deal wouldn’t include an option to buy (covering Lejeune’s absence this season) and that a work permit isn’t a formality, the player having only appeared up to Under 20 level for Brazil.

They state that the loan fee payable for Newcastle is believed to be £1.8m for the season’s loan.
