ARSENAL LEGEND OPENS UP ON ‘DISASTROUS’ CLUB NEWS

Arsenal have undergone significant changes on and off the field over the course of the last few months and further news emerging yesterday provided another huge shift for the club.

Widespread reports revealed that majority shareholder Stan Kroenke had reached a deal to purchase Alisher Usmanov’s 30% shares in the club, which takes the American billionaire above the 90% threshold that requires an outright purchase of all remaining shares.

It sees Kroenke become the sole owner of Arsenal, the first time in the club’s history that has occurred, and leaves many fans that were members of the AST ousted from their position without being able to fight for their case.

While we will have to wait to see what the lasting effects of this takeover are, Arsenal legend Ian Wright did not hold back on his opinions on the matter when writing for The Sun – stating the news is ‘absolutely disastrous’.

“I can sum up the prospect of Stan Kroenke becoming the sole owner of Arsenal in two words — absolutely disastrous. And if, as seems highly likely, that does become the case, I genuinely fear the days of seeing the Gunners challenging for top honours on a regular basis may well have come and gone.

“The genuine worry — and it’s a very, very real worry — is that now, more than ever before, it will be about getting money THROUGH Arsenal, not FOR them. The club is in my heart, it really is, and I would have no problem looking Kroenke in the eye and telling him straight, ‘You don’t care’.

“I just hate what’s happening. It tears me apart, because right now we are nowhere near challenging for the top honours in football.

“We’re left hoping and praying that new manager Unai Emery’s coaching ability will get us through, or I really do fear for us. And to put so much onus on a man who is still getting to know everyone’s name, let alone what they can do, has to be a worry.”
