Jose Mourinho starts Paul Pogba after just four days’ training and makes him Manchester United captain

Paul Pogba has been handed the Manchester United armband by Jose Mourinho and starts Friday night’s Premier League opener against Leicester City after just a few days training.

The Red Devils kick off the new season at Old Trafford with Mourinho juggling a number of injury worries, while many of his players only returned to training at the start of the week following their World Cup exploits. Among them was Pogba, who had his first training session on Monday but impressed to such an extent with his application and physical condition that he has been picked to start.

The Frenchman has been linked with a move to Barcelona this summer amid reports of a fallout with Mourinho, but the Portuguese coach also made a huge statement by handing Pogba the captaincy. Asked about the significance of making Pogba captain, Mourinho told Sky Sports: ‘Last season he was captain a few times. Valencia is captain, but Valencia is not here.
